Ewing to Miss Start of Training Camp
NEW YORK (AP) - New York Knicks center Patrick Ewing is not fully recovered from his partially torn left Achilles' tendon and will miss training camp. "It's still sore, it still hurts and I'm not sure when I'm going to be back," Ewing said Thursday at the New York All-Star Basketball Classic.
Ewing, 37, tore the tendon in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Indiana Pacers June 1. He missed the rest of the playoffs and the finals, where the Knicks lost to the San Antonio Spurs in five games.
The 11-time All-Star center said the tendon was healed, but he still has tendinitis and cannot run. Ewing missed 12 of 50 games last season because of the tendinitis.
His rehabilitation consists of lifting weights, using a stationary bike and treadmill, and running in a pool.
``Whenever my body heals and the pain and all the swelling goes away is when I'll be ready," Ewing said.
Further complicating things for New York is a sprained medial collateral ligament sustained by backup center Chris Dudley earlier this week. The 6-foot-11 Dudley won't be able to run for 4-6 weeks and will miss the start of training camp as well.
